I'm apparently known around here as a guy who knows stuff, so our Blogger Extraordinaire has invited me to share some of these questionably interesting tidbits as they come up.
I recently mentioned a Widow's Walk in our office architectural discourse (AKA lunch in the park), and I was provided an opportunity to describe it. The railings on the roof of a New England style house date back to when mariner's wives would pace back and forth staring out to sea longing for the return of her husband's ship. I like to think they all made it home safely and that the name is just misleading.
